We call them our Big Mamas.
Meet some of the people who stepped up right away, as excited about this project as we are. All of them are members of the Substack community, as writers and readers. They believe in our mission: to shine a very bright light on the injustices we face every single day. They believe in us and the stories we must tell, every day of our lives.
They help make this project real. We are more than grateful, we are gobsmacked.
A fan of writers, readers, artists, and book covers, every month on Short Attention Span Reader, Jodi judges a book by its cover alone. No books were harmed––or read––in the making of these videos. This is not your mother’s book club. Jodi will review your book (cover), too!
Elizabeth is a film & media producer at Emboddity, artist, writer, and stroke survivor. Writing about the body in the Death & Taxes story slam in April 2026, you’ll find her story here.
Amy’s a multifaceted midlife woman and widowed mom. Exploring the intersection of sexuality and grief as a catalyst for growth after catastrophic loss. Follow along as she reinvents her life. Amy’s new book Widow in the City, was published in May 2026 and is available on Bookshop and Amazon.
Meet my first Big Mama! And kids, she’s the real thing. My mama. Diane Tepper. Without HER, I wouldn’t be HERE doing this thing...so thanks for that Mom. We’ve had a lot of ups and downs but we keep coming back together, trying our damnedest to get this Mother & Daughter thing right. Sometimes it’s harder than others, but yes, I do love this old redhead. I didn’t make that moniker up. That’s what she calls herself. Trust me. She’s a redhead. You may not see it now, but it’s there. It’s an attitude more than anything. And she’s a lefty. Even though I make fun of her incessant photo-snapping (see the video), she’s awfully good at it. Here’s the story I told about us at the Mothers & Daughters slam in May 2026.
My mom made me a reader and gave me a great design sense to boot.
Socially anxious misfit overthinker learning to be brave anyway. Co-creator of In A Nutshell Storytelling, Wildcard Story Swap, and The Nutshell True Story Hour. She also publishes This Might Go Terribly. Writer, editor, storyteller. Failed to hike the Pacific Crest Trail three time. She walked 5 million miles on the Camino in May 2026 (I’m exaggerating the 5,000,000. It was more like 4,500,000. I round up. Just minutes after we announced the birth of Wham! Bam! Thank You! Slam! Amy swooped in and became our first Big Mama! She’s telling a story in our June event, Kill the Patriarchy. Can’t wait to hear it. Amy and Nan became friends and then realized that they’re cosmic twins!
Michael Boccio has been one of Nan’s benefactors from the beginning of her tenure on Substack, as a paid subscriber to The Next Write Thing, and then as soon as she announced the birth of Wham! Bam! Thank You! Slam!, Michael was right there, after Amy Bee and became our second Big Mama. We call our Founding Subscribers “Big Mamas” here, and he had absolutely no problem with that.
I’m an aging singer-songwriter/recording artist and writer. I like to share the view from here, and I especially like the conversations that follow. My stack is called Fellow Human.
Snarky but sensitive X-ennial navigating life as a newly-diagnosed neurodivergent human. I am an award-winning playwright, as well as an essayist, watercolor artist, and theater producer. Proud resident of Queens, NYC. Kari appeared in The Love Boat slam in February 2026. See her story here.
We want you to be a member of our community.
If you value feminist voices, women’s voices, and marginalized voices and want to hear the the stories of our lives, this is the place. Wham! Bam! Thank You! Slam!
The world feels scarier than ever right now. We must witness and fight the injustice, the oppression, and the attempts to control our freedom. If you’d like to explore options for sponsorship, reach out to Nan for a friendly Zoom.
