You CAN Do A Story Slam! True or False?

The answer is a resounding TRUE! I have no doubt. Here are my thoughts, and an example of a 4-minute story I performed last week at my local slam.

Hi, Lovelies!

There’s been so much excitement since we officially launched last Friday, and we’re over the moon, enjoying the enthusiasm we’re hearing from so many of you; your feedback has been amazing.

Our January event, My Body, My Rules has one storyteller spot left. Could it be your spot, lucky you? If it is, send us a message and tell us you’re in.

February’s Love Boat slam is filling up fast.

Thirty hours after our launch, we found ourselves at #11 on the Substack Rising Bestseller list for the humor category. That’s mainly because so many of you jumped right in and became paid subscribers.

We have so much gratitude for your generosity and excitement. We’re thrilled!

Throughout this week, we’ve bounced up and down on that silly list. Even though we tried to act blasé about it, it was exciting to see Wham! Bam! Thank You! Slam! rank right up there with the cool kids. It took me until I was 64 to become a “cool kid.” Go figure.

The question really is, why do I still care so much?

If you’re curious as to whether or not you can write a story and perform on our virtual stage, I’m here to tell you that, YES, indeed you can! I was terrified the first time I got on a stage to perform in a slam. And yes, there may have been an Ativan involved, way back then.

My doctor said I could. Okay?

After I performed, the terror subsided almost immediately and was replaced with passion, elevated self-esteem, confidence, and joy. The unknown became known and I was 100% in. And I no longer require pharmaceutical interventions to get me in front of a mic. Now, it’s hard to hold me back.

Are you scared? Are you worried that you can’t tell an effective story in 500 words, give or take? In this case, less IS more. We’ll be saying more about that later.

Do you have the itch to perform? Are you shy, or too much of an introvert to try?

Believe it or not, I’m an introvert, too. Putting myself on a stage in front of 300 people or recording myself telling a story on camera has given me a gift I didn’t really know I wanted or needed.

I discovered that there’s a forward-facing part of me that loves laughter and applause. That I’m a ham, (albeit a kosher ham), and that I’m enjoying seeing myself on video for the first time in my whole long life. What freedom. It reminds me that it’s okay to love myself.

To look in a mirror, and see beauty and sparkle reflected back at me.

Today, I’m sharing a story that I told last week at my local slam. I’m not going to reveal what happened. You’ll have to watch the video to find out. Some of you may have seen this on Wednesday when I posted from The Next Write Thing. I won’t be duplicating my efforts so much going forward, but this week, I needed to share the news all around.

Eileen and I––along with our live audience members and readers––are here to cheer you on, listen, and give you tips that are sure to boost you.

There’s something very special about brevity. About learning how little it takes to paint a full picture of a scene from your life. It’s a skill, for sure, but it’s completely doable.

It’s about reaching for and capturing the essence of a meaningful slice of YOUR life, then sharing it generously with the people who want to hear your story and will end up feeling like they know you just a little bit better, and they’ll be reassured that all of us share so much in common.

We need community more than we ever have before; to have each others’ backs.

I’m in. Are you?

Get your pens, pencils, legal pads, and laptops out, clean your damn eyeglasses, and take a look at the themes for each slam.

If you have questions, please ring our bell! You can do this. I know you can.

And here’s the story…it had to contain the phrase, “True or False?” Enjoy!

Come play with us. Come as an audience member to the first show on January 17th (and we have one slot remaining for a 10th storyteller…). Or check out our calendar of monthly themes, buy a ticket and see a slam. And, if you know anyone who might love to tell a story or see us do our stuff, please share this.

The time for women’s voices is NOW, and we want to make some noise!

A lot of noise.
